Client Name: Mercy Community Residential Aged Care
Location: Queensland (Emmaus, Allambe & Bethesda, and Mary Damian sites)
Project Completion: Staged –
Emmaus (June 2025), Allambe & Bethesda (November 2024), Mary Damian (December 2024)
Annual Solar Production: 1,201.7 MWh combined –
Emmaus: 508 MWh, Allambe & Bethesda: 381 MWh, Mary Damian: 312.7 MWh
Mercy Community has turned its sustainability commitments into action, installing nearly 825.12 kW of solar power across three of its Residential Aged Care sites: Emmaus, Allambe, and Mary Damian. Driven by the People & Planet Movement, these installations not only reduce operating costs and carbon emissions but also support the long-term delivery of compassionate, person-centred care for residents. With 1,719 Astronergy CHSM60M-HC 480W panels now powering these facilities, Mercy Community is leading the way in demonstrating how aged care can combine care for people with care for the planet.
THE CHALLENGES
Delivering large-scale solar projects across aged care facilities presents unique challenges. Energy systems must integrate seamlessly into sites where comfort, continuity of care, and resident safety are paramount. Each location came with its own operational requirements, from Emmaus’ 92-room community to the smaller, dementia-supportive environment at Allambe and the Mary Damian Centre’s 44 modern rooms. DS Energy’s role was to deliver solar that supported sustainability while maintaining an uninterrupted daily life for residents and staff.
THE SOLUTION
DS Energy designed and installed a total of 825.12 kW of solar capacity across the three centres, with systems tailored to each site:
Emmaus: 350.4 kW system (730 panels)
Allambe & Bethesda: 264 kW system (550 panels)
Mary Damian: 210.72 kW system (439 panels)
All sites were equipped with Astronergy CHSM60M-HC 480W panels, chosen for their efficiency and durability. Installations were staged and carefully coordinated to minimise disruption to residents and ensure smooth integration with existing infrastructure. This approach allowed Mercy Community to achieve both immediate and long-term sustainability goals without compromising the delivery of high-quality aged care services.
THE RESULT
The benefits of the project are already measurable:
Figures as of 9th of October.
Emmaus: 124.38 tCO₂ reduction since inception ( Energised only one month prior).
Allambe & Bethesda: 225.59 tCO₂ reduction since inception
Mary Damian: 165.173 tCO₂ reduction since inception
Together, the three centres are reducing reliance on the grid, cutting operating costs, and preventing more than 366 tonnes of carbon emissions each year. These savings allow Mercy Community to reinvest in what matters most: supporting residents through person-centred care, dementia-inclusive programs, and the creation of safe, connected environments.
By partnering with DS Energy, Mercy Community has shown how aged care providers can lead in sustainability, ensuring a positive impact for both today’s residents and future generations.
