Why More Sporting Clubs Are Investing in Solar and Battery Storage

Community sporting clubs are the heart of many Australian communities. They’re where kids learn teamwork, volunteers give their time, and local communities come together.

But with operating costs rising, many clubs are asking how they can protect their budgets while continuing to invest in players, programs and facilities.

The Growing Cost of Community Sport

Like many community organisations, clubs are under increasing financial pressure. Insurance premiums, maintenance, equipment and operational expenses are all becoming more expensive, and energy costs are no exception.

While many of these costs are difficult to control, energy is one area where clubs can take proactive steps to reduce expenses, improve resilience and create more room to invest back into players, programs and facilities.

That’s why more clubs are beginning to ask a different question: What if our energy infrastructure could help fund the club’s future?

Why Solar and Battery Storage Make Sense for Sporting Clubs

For community sporting clubs, energy use rarely follows a simple 9-to-5 pattern. Lighting alone can consume significant amounts of power, particularly for clubs running evening training sessions and weekend competitions. Add clubhouses, refrigeration, kitchens, change rooms, gym facilities and administration spaces, and those costs can quickly add up.

At the same time, many clubs have one major advantage: space.

Large clubhouse rooftops, amenities buildings and other facilities often provide excellent opportunities for solar installations, allowing clubs to generate their own power and reduce reliance on the grid.

When combined with battery storage, the benefits become even greater. Energy generated during the day can be stored and used later for evening training sessions, game days, clubhouse operations and other periods of peak demand, helping clubs get more value from the energy they produce.

A well-designed solar and battery system can help sporting clubs:

  • Reduce power bills by generating and storing more of their own energy
  • Protect against rising electricity costs and improve budget certainty
  • Power evening training and events using stored solar energy
  • Reduce reliance on the grid and improve energy resilience
  • Lower operating costs and free up funds for other priorities
  • Support sustainability goals and demonstrate environmental leadership

Most importantly, every dollar saved on energy is a dollar that can be reinvested back into the club.

That might mean upgrading facilities, purchasing new equipment, supporting junior development programs, improving member experiences or simply reducing financial pressure on volunteers and committee members.

For many clubs, solar and battery storage are no longer just environmental initiatives. They are practical tools for building a stronger, more sustainable future for the organisation and the community it serves.

Available Grants for Sporting Clubs

Government funding programs continue to create opportunities for clubs across a number of sectors, supporting everything from participation to improved facilities.

For clubs considering solar, battery storage or other energy upgrades, there has rarely been a better time to act.

The Australian Government’s new Game On: Teaming Up for Climate Action Program will provide $35.3 million over two funding rounds to help community sporting clubs improve their facilities and reduce operating costs.

The first round opens from 1 July to 28 July 2026, with $17.6 million available to support up to 500 sporting clubs across Australia.

Funding is expected to be available for projects that:

  • Upgrade facilities with energy-efficient technologies, including battery storage
  • Improve resilience to extreme weather events
  • Enhance facility infrastructure to reduce long-term operating costs

While funding programs change over time, grants for sports clubs continue to emerge at federal, state and local government levels, creating opportunities for clubs to reduce upfront investment costs and accelerate projects that may otherwise take years to deliver.

For club committees and boards, staying informed about available funding opportunities can significantly improve project feasibility.
